Skipping Dental Hygiene And Dental Visits Contribute To Gum Infection

If you let oral hygiene slip and have dental visits become irregular, you allow plaque to build up on teeth and permit it to spread below the gumline. Leaving bacteria protected because your toothbrush cannot reach them. To help dislodge plaque, good flossing is necessary; however when plaque is not removed, the bacteria in the oral cavity will multiply continuously and cause a more serious gum infection. Gums become inflamed when plaque build up reaches below the gumline. As the gum tissues become more swollen, they detach from the tooth forming a space, or "pocket," between the tooth and gums. The periodontal pockets invites further plaque accumulation since removing plaque becomes difficult already. The inflammatory response to the plaque bacteria may spread to the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, causing these structures to be destroyed if left untreated.
